Everyone
- A copy of the front and back of your Permanent Resident Card (green card). If it is lost, a copy of the receipt for Form I-90.
- Payment, or a reduced-fee request or fee waiver request (paper filing only).
- Two passport-style photos only if you live outside the U.S.
- At the interview: the original green card, a government photo ID, all passports and travel documents from the statutory period, and the appointment notice.
If you apply through marriage (3-year route)
- Proof your spouse is a U.S. citizen (birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or U.S. passport).
- Your current marriage certificate.
- Proof that all prior marriages of you and your spouse ended (divorce decrees, annulments, death certificates).
- Evidence that you have lived in marital union, for example joint tax returns, a joint lease or mortgage, joint bank accounts, or children's birth certificates.
If you have any criminal or police history
Report everything anywhere in the world, even if dismissed or expunged. For each incident the N-400 instructions ask for:
- Arrested with no charges filed: the arrest report and an official statement that no charges were filed.
- Convicted or in a diversion/deferred program: the sentencing record and proof you completed the sentence or program.
- Charges dismissed: the court order.
Photocopies may go with the application, but bring originals or court-certified copies to the interview. Traffic tickets generally need no documents unless alcohol or drugs were involved, there was an arrest, or someone was seriously injured. Consider speaking to an attorney or accredited representative before filing if you have any record.
Taxes, child support and Selective Service
- Overdue taxes: IRS transcripts, a signed payment agreement and proof of its status. Bring transcripts if you were abroad for more than 6 months at a time.
- Child support: if you have children who do not live with you, bring evidence of support (court orders, payment records).
- Selective Service: men who lived in the U.S. between ages 18 and 26 were generally required to register. Bring your registration number, or a status information letter if you did not register.
Before you mail or submit
